Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on the 21st of March that Coleman was to play Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other characters have left the series. Moffat claimed that he selected Coleman to be the companion due to her ability to be the best companion for Smith. In addition, Moffat noted that she talked faster than Smith.
